Automatically create Grid thumbnails for the blog

The grid style blog layout option is a unique one and needs some attention given to your featured images. When using this optional layout for your blog, it’s important to make sure your grid stays nice and consistent where each post summary is the same size as the other. To give you an example, here is a screenshot where all the featured images are the same size:

You have a couple options of generating the featured images:

  1. Crop and size your images before uploading
  2. Use the theme setting to automatically create your thumbnails to a size of 540×360 pixels.

The only caveat of auto generation is when this is enabled, every image you upload to your Media Library will now have a grid size version as well. I personally prefer and recommend cropping and sizing your images before uploading them for more control.

Enable Automatic Featured Images for the Grid Style

  1. Go to Appearance >> Customize >> Blog Options
  2. Find the “Enable Grid Thumbnails” and check the box
    enable grid thumbnails
  3. Click “Save & Publish

Now when you upload a featured image for your blog posts when using the Grid style layout, WordPress will generate a 540×360 thumbnail.
